Joy filled the air on 29th June, 1951 when the late Rowena Fowler andLeonard Braynen gave birth to a bouncing baby girl, whom they named Willamena.Due to complications in childbirth Rowena was called home by God. Willamena wasthen raised by Elizabeth Fowler-Colebroke, whom she affectionately called “mom”.Elizabeth loved and cared for “Mena” as she affectionately called her, as herown.
Willamena attended the Andros All-Aged School, where she completed mostof her studies. At the tender age of 15, she came to Nassau to seek a betterway of life. She was employed at Club Med as a Maid and to Dolphin Inn/AstoriaHotel as a cook for a short period of time. Willamena later found gainfulemployment at the Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC)as a General Labourer from 25th January 1982 - 29th June, 2011. After30+ years with the Corporation she retired.
Willamena met and fell inlove with Clovis. They knew they were destined to be together and got marriedon 31st March, 1985. This union was blessed with seven children. She ispre-deceased by three of her children (Alonzo, Coralee and Advilda).
Some adjectives used to describe her are: Kind-hearted, outgoing, vibrant, loyal, hard-working, pleasant, dependable and trust-worthy. “Mena” or “Moy”as she was affectionately called was a giant of a woman. She always strived tobe the best. Many who came in contact with her, always talked about how warmand engaging she was as a person. She helped as much as she could.Once you were in her presence, you never lacked for anything. Her warmpleasant smile would make you grow towards her and make you feel like you knewher for sometime.
Throughout the years, Willamena battled with two comorbidities. Aftercountless years of attending Doctor and taking prescribed medications led toKidney failure and required dialysis treatment. On Sunday 3rd October, 2021,Willamena complained to her husband and children that she was having severeabdominal pain. She was then taken to the Hospital to seek further care. HerDoctors and children did all they could to persuade her to take dialysis. Eventhough her condition was life threatening she would always tell the Doctors “letGod do his work.” On Saturday 16th October, 2021 at 9;45pm, God called his daughterhome.
