In Loving Memory of

Samuel Canter

5th November 1928
to
8th July 2023

Born on the 5th day of November 1928 to thehard-working parents, Joseph Canter (Papa) and Estella Rahming Canter (Mama) was a bouncing baby boy, third of 13children. He was given the name Samuel Canter. The little settlement of Cantor Sound would never be the same again.

Samuel was a happy child growing up in Cantor Sound,North Mastic Point, Andros. As a child, Samuel would accompany his father tohis job at the Tar Pit. Like Papa, Samuel’strue love was the sea. Samuel, his father, his brother David and Uncle Buckywould take long fishing excursions, which then fuelled Sam‘sdesire to become a fisherman. Sadly due to the tragic death of his father whileout at sea, he no longer wished to pursue that dream.

Being thehelpful little boy he was, he also enjoyed helping Mama around the garden. Nowthe saying goes, Papa was easy-going, but Mama was quick with the stick. Shetaught him all the trades that eventually took him through life.

At the age of 12 Samuel was sent to Nassau to live andonly went back to Andros occasionally in his lifetime. As a young man, hetraveled and worked on many Government projects. He was determined to create abetter life for himself, which, unfortunately, didn’tinclude a family of his own. After completing various projects, Samuel workedin the tourism industry for several years. He then changed occupation andbecame a gardener. On his way home one day he sustained injuries to his legthat would change the course of his life. Now with an injured leg, unable toperform his duties fully he was relieved of his duties. Being the hard workerhe was, Samuel refused to retire and instead performed side jobs from time totime. As the years passed his health continued to decline and he was forced toconfine to his home. July 7th he was taken to hospital where he peacefullypassed away Saturday, July 8th, 2023.

Sam served for many years as a loyal member of Rhode‘s Memorial Methodist Church. He always spoke highly ofhis church family and took pleasure in knowing that one day his body would belaid out here at Rhode's Memorial. May he rest until that resurrection mourn. Atlast, his petition was granted. It is finished.
