Birth
In the quaint and quiet settlement of Wemsyss’ Bight Eleuthera, on November 24th, 1948, to the late Olrice Hartman Nixon and Lenora Barr Mackey-Nixon, Olrice Nixon was born.
Education and Family Life
Olrice attended Wemsyss’ Bight All Age School. He served as a monitor in school until the age of 12. At the age of 17, he moved to Nassau and attended the Technical Training College. He later worked at a short time at Barclays Bank. He left the bank and went to Bahamas Teachers College in 1970 where he later graduated and became a trained a teacher in 1972.
He met his wife during his time at the Bahamas Teachers College, Janet Marie Lockhart. They were joined in Holy Matrimony on August 12th, 1972 after completing Teachers College. They were posted to Greencastle All Age School in Eleuthera. In 1973, he was posted Principal of Deep Creek Primary School South Andros and in 1974 he returned to New Providence where he was posted at L. W. Young High School as a mathematics teacher.
In August 1977, he received an In Service Award to attend the Guyana School of Agriculture. Here he received a diploma in Agriculture in 1979. In July 1979, he was assigned to the C.I. Gibson School to teach Agriculture Science. In 1980 he enrolled in the University of Miami Programme where he completed his degree in education 1981. In 1989 he was appointed Assistant Family Island Administrator in Exuma and Commissioner in Crooked Island and Mayaguana in 1992 - 1994.
He worked at Success Training College on Bernard Road for many years with Dr. Deswell Forbes. Years later they moved to Palmdale and then the name was changed to Bahamas Institute of Business Technology. He worked at the Department of Land of Survey for a period three years as an Estate Officer.
Olrice was a part of many civic organizations. He loved playing slow pitch softball with his friends on Saturdays. He also became a part of Masons Lodge for a period in his life. However, after attending Curcillo Weekend his spiritual life became different. He became a committed Lay Minister and Chalice Bearer at All Saints Anglican Church. Due to his unwavering commitment to this ministry he was named Father of the Year.
Even though he was going through health challenges with cancer he still found time every week to attend services giving praise and thanks to his God. He enjoyed attending Evensong which he claimed was the best service in the church and Friday morning Mass.
In 2018 he started treatment for 4th Stage Thyroid Cancer. His children were his pride and joy and he along with his wife ensure that they received a good education. He has been blessed in life with four daughters who continues to make outstanding contributions in The Bahamas and internationally. Olrice was loved and cared for by his family. His children ensured that all of his needs were provided. Daily his home was filled with family and friends and this outpouring of loved helped as the support he needed to fight against all odds for the last seven years. Olrice had full support of his entire family during his illness and his radioactive treatments took place in Cuba. During the six weeks he was surrounded by family and intimate friends. His God was merciful he came for him and took him unto himself when he saw that the pain was too much for him to bear. On 26th May, 2024 Trinity Sunday at 11:45, he reassured his wife that he was going home to be with Jesus.
