In the beautiful settlement of Fair Field, CrookedIsland on September 13, 1947, Rev. Curtis & Evelyn Moss, (both deceased),welcomed their 4th child – a bouncing baby girl. They named her Mavis Irene. She grew up to be a beautiful young lady.
Mavis began her early education at the Cripple HillPrimary All-Aged School, where she received her formal education and obtainedthe Bahamas Junior Certificate in several subjects. She served as a Monitress from 1962-1964.
Mavis left Crooked Island in 1964 to join the staffof the Princess Margaret Hospital as a Student Nurse. She spent 3 years there then moved on tobecome a Supervisor at the Bahamas Security Services. While there, she attended the Nassau Academyof Business where she obtained certificates in Typing Stage1 and Stage 2 aswell as Switchboard Operations.
She met and married Daniel McKenzie on January 24,1970.
In 1971, Mavis joined the staff of the BahamasTelecommunications Corporation (B.T.C.) as a Clerk in the TelegraphsDepartment. She spent 14 years in thatDepartment before moving to the Customer Service Department where she spentanother 14 years. She retired in 1998 asone of the Supervisors in that Department.
In 1971, Mavis committed her life to the Lord andwas baptized by the Rev. Dr. C.W. Saunders into the membership of Salem UnionBaptist Church. This commitment led herto serve for 2 years as Secretary to the former Marion Farrington Circle and asa member of Salem’s Senior Choir from 1992-2003 when her health began tofail. Mavis was faithful in her serviceto her God.
Mavis is predeceased by her parents: Rev. Curtis and Evelyn Moss, sister: Francina Ferguson, brother: Hilton and Kendal Moss, brothers-in-law: Samuel McQuay, Jake Petty and ArndtBehrens.
