On August 18, 1924, in the picturesquesettlement of Binnacle Hill, Acklins, a beautiful baby girl was born to Josephand Martha Munroe. They named her Mabel Anna. She joined her big brother,Luther. A few years later they, welcomedher brother Randall (who died during his childhood) and her sister, Marjorie.Mabel adored her sister and brother, but in later years also enjoyed a lovingrelationship with her other siblings, Rosetta, and Bruce Munroe.
As a child, Mabelattended the Binnacle Hill All Age School. She later met a handsome young manfrom Inagua by the name of Albert Daxon, and they were joined in matrimony onJune 9, 1946. The couple relocated shortly thereafter to Nassau in pursuit ofbetter economic opportunities. This union of more than six decades produced onebiological child, Barbara but they also raised her nieces, Merle and Maria whowere 2 years and 9 months respectively at the time of their mother Marjorie’sdeath. Several years later, they adopted Tyrone, the youngest son of herbrother, Luther who was only 9 months old when her sister-in-law, Nora passedaway. They also played a pivotal role in the rearing of Luther’s otherchildren, Martin, Joe, Drucilla and Janet. Mabel and Albert’s love of childreninfluenced their decision to nurture their grandchildren, Monique, and Williamas infants, and to love all their nieces and nephews like the child of theirloins.
Mabel and her husband werea “Power Couple” with an entrepreneurial spirit. Together they owned a groceryand dry goods store, a food store on Charles Vincent Street, and several rentalproperties. From these ventures, they provided jobs for several persons andassisted many in need. She was a Christian woman who lived according to theteachings and principles of Christ, especially the commandment to love yourneighbor as yourself. No church or family member in need ever visited theDaxon’s house and left emptyhanded, as Mabel was an excellent example of thevirtuous woman described in Proverbs, Chapter 31 and worthy of praise.
Though raised as a Methodist, Mabel became a saved, sanctified, and holy ghost filled member of the Church of God of Prophecy, East StreetTabernacle, along with her husband during the early tenure of Bishop Alvin S. Moss. She was active in several ministries including Women’s Missionary Band, Choir, and Prayer Band. The Daxons gave generously of their time, talent, and treasure, and in many respects became pillars in the Church of God of Prophecy, ShirleyStreet, where they worshipped with the Saints of God for more than sixty years.
Due to the Covid-19pandemic and declining health, Mabel was forced to remain at home in recentyears but continued to encourage others in the faith from the confinement ofher bed. She departed this life quietly after nearly a century of earthlysojourn in the early morning hours of Sunday, 3, July 2022 to be with her Lord.
May her soul rest inpeace!
