A Time to be Born
On 13th September,1951, a bouncing boy was born to Gregory Sr. and Miriam (Maggie} Harrison. Theynamed him Garth Gregory Harrison.
The Early years
Garth brought great joy to thefamily. As a child, he was so bow-legged that family members and friends saidthey felt like he would fall while he was running. No one ever witnessed afall. Garth out grew this as he got older. A story was always told about Garthcoming home from preschool and filling his own bottle. He would stand near thecorner of ‘the alley’ and didn’t mind his dad’s friends teasing him. He juststood tall with his bottle in his mouth. After the birth of a younger brother,he told his Mom that he would give his bottle to the baby. However, the babypassed, so Garth took his bottle back.
A Time for Education
Garth attended Mother Donaldson’sPreschool, Western Preparatory, Western Junior, Western Senior and PrinceWilliams High School.
A Time to Work
After graduating from highSchool, Garth decided to seek employment. His work history included theMinistry of Labour, IBM, National Insurance, FunTown- Chicago, ModernageFurniture-Florida, Bahamas Electricity Corporation and City Properties Limited.
A Time for Love {A Fairy Tale Romance}
Garth fell in love withTerecita (Terry) Rodgers at an early age. They were to be married, however, itwas not meant to be at that time. Garth moved to Chicago and lived there abouttwenty-five years. When he returned to Nassau, it was as if he never left. Heand Terry had a strong love for each other. Garth and Terry were married on 23rd December, 1999.
Garth loved family andwas a real comedian. He was always the life of the parties and family gatherings.He and his brothers, Gregory and Ethelbert would hang out almost every week.
Garth prided himself onthe way he dressed, so he would often tease his siblings saying that theywanted to look like him. He also doused himself in cologne and would say ‘takea sniff’. He was such a fun person.
ATime to Die
Garth entered thePrincess Margaret Hospital for what the family thought would be a ‘minor’surgery. However, after being discharged, he continued to experience somechallenges. He was experiencing unbearable pain and had to be re-admitted. Henever recovered.
Despite what he was goingthrough in hospital, Garth remained cheerful with family and friends. He wouldtell jokes and tease as he usually did. One of his highlights was when two ofhis daughters, Garcia and Giavannii who reside in Chicago, surprised him with avisit. Of particular note is the fact that Garth expressed gratitude toeveryone for every visit, phone call, prayer or word of encouragement.
Terry remained a faithfulwife to Garth and stood by him through thick and thin. Every day she and theirdaughter, Gail and other family members would visit him in hospital.
Although Garth knew theLord, for assurance his brother-in-law, Deacon Stephen Thompson and DeaconTerell Dauphin led him through the “sinner’s prayer.” Rev. Christopher Brownalso offered a prayer although Garth had become very low.
Even though Garth hadperked up on several occasions, he began saying that he was tired and wanted togo ‘home’. It was obvious that he was ready to go to his eternal home. In theearly hours of Thursday, 27th October 2022, Garth slipped peacefullyinto eternity. He had the most peaceful look on his face, smooth and radiant.No more pain, no more sickness, no more hospitals. He now awaits his new bodywhile resting in peace.
Sleep on Garth. Take yourrest. We love you, but Jesus loves you best. You will forever be in our hearts.May your soul rest in peace.
