A TIME TOBE BORN

On August 30th1969, the late Elizabeth Newchurch (predeceased) and Erskine Pinder (predeceased)welcomed their bouncing baby boy, who was given the name “Ernest Pinder”. He was indeed a precious gift from God and was thejoy of his father’s eyes.

A TIME TO LEARN

“Lil Ernest” as he wasaffectionately called began his early education at the St. Barnabas Preschool. Hethen went on to attend the Woodcock Primary School and after completing thisstage he moved on to T. G. Glover Junior High School, upon completion heattended C.C. Sweeting Senior High School.

Ernest was born during the timewhen our culture was celebrated in the lives of Bahamians. In the community ofHospital Lane South, known as Black Village, there was a time when thecommunity will host cultural events and the older folks will enjoy a night offire dance to the rhythm of the goatskin drum. As a child, Ernest enjoyed thesounds and rhythms of the goatskin drum and could be found sitting around thefire with his father, who would be the drum while the others fire danced along. His love for the rhythms he heard coming from the drum, inspired him to becomea well-known goatskin drummer, a craft he learned from his father.

A TIME TO LIVE

Ernest faced many challenges inlife after losing both of his parents at a young age. Before his father’spassing, he assigned guardianship of Ernest to the late John & ElizabethCapron (both predeceased) and Ernest became their baby boy.

To know Ernest is to love him. Hedid it his way. He enjoyed life and no matter what he did, you could not helpbut love him because he always would let you know he loved you. He called outyour name, expressing how much he loved you and requested each time that youtell his sister and niece who lived abroad, how much he loved them. It was ajoy to make sure he was dressed for special occasions and his last birthday wasno exception, as he was sharply dressed.

Ernest love for drum beating leadto him becoming a proud member of the Shell Saxon “SUPERSTARS” Junkanoo group. Youwould find him on any major junkanoo parade or rush-out in is ‘zone’, in theback line with Michael beating his goatskin drum and enjoying the sweet music.

A TIME TO WORK

At the youthful age of seventeen, with thehelp of, Michael (“Pastry”), Ernest gained employment with the Ministry ofYouth and Sports in August of 1986, where he worked for a number of years. Afterhis time here, he became an employee of Apex Pavers, where he worked along withhis brother David for a few years. After leaving Apex, he worked along with hisneighbors in the community doing odd jobs, including working along with Michaelat the Black Village Carwash whenever he felt like; he did it his way. Most morningsyou would also find him and his best friend Jarmaal taking down the window shuttersfor Shell Gas Station.

A TIME TO DIE

During the Morning of MondayOctober 4th, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Ernest slipped awaypeacefully from TIME to ETERNITY. He will surely be missed by his family andthe Black Village Community.
