A TIME TO BE BORN

Elkanah Andrews was born on 31st March,1935 to the late Edwin and Matrinella Andrews in Long Bay Cays, South Andros,Bahamas.

A TIME TO LEARN

As a young child, Elkanah attended the Deep Creekand Kemp’s Bay All Age Schools. While in school, he was known to have anexceptional memory and was able to learn and recite many of the poems andstories out of the Royal Readers books. Some of which he recited up to themonth before his demise.

A TIME TO WORK

In his earlier years, Elkanah sought gainfulemployment; and joining his older brothers, he went on “The Contract” inFlorida to pick fruits and vegetables for the USA farmers. Additionally at an early age, Elkanah learnt thetrade of Barbering and was able to master the hairstyle known as the “FlatTop”. He continued to trim client’s hair until he was no longer able to standup without the assistance of a walker or wheelchair. Being an industrious man who always sought toprovide for his family, for a brief period during the early 1980’s, Elkanah wasa bus driver on the Bay/Market/East Streets route. This provided an opportunityfor this friendly soul to make even more friends and acquaintances.

 A TIME TO LOVE

After returning home from The Contract, Elkanah met,and later married Ms. Majorie Lagloria Fox of Sandy Point, Abaco, Bahamas on 29th April, 1963.

 A TIME TO WORSHIP

Up until the time he was unable to drive, Elkanahenjoyed attending church services at the Transfiguration Baptist Church. In hisyounger years, he could be seen most Sundays bringing his five (5) daughters tochurch with him, sitting near the front pew on the right side of the sanctuary.

A TIME TO LIVE LIFE

Apart from Barbering, Elkanah also enjoyed singingand could be heard occasionally singing his gospel songs late at night, even ifit meant keeping everyone else in the house up while he did so. Additionally Elkanah was a family man. He loved hisfamily dearly and had an infectious personality that just seemed to draw peopleto him. It seemed as though he knew everyone, and everyone knew him. Hecherished the vacations that he and his wife took with his brothers and theirwives in the early 1990’s but most importantly, he cherished the vacations thathe took with his immediate family. The memories will linger in our heartsforever.

A TIME OF ILLNESS

Over the course of his life, especially in thelatter years, Elkanah developed some medical ailments – heart condition, Diabetes,Hypertension and Arthritis, which slowed him down and limited his mobility. About four (4) years ago, while exiting a friend’sbus, Elkanah suffered a fall, and shortly thereafter he was confined to awheelchair for about three (3) months. Being the determined, head strong personthat he was, nothing would keep him down and with the assistance of a walker,he was able to walk again. During his limited mobility, his brother Burntell(now deceased), would come by and keep his company, and play cards (Eleven Points)with him for hours, 3 - 4 times each week. He would also cook and bring some ofthe foods that they ate when they were younger, as well as bring fish, andfruits and vegetables from his farm. On occasion, he would also come by and assistwith giving daddy a bath. After losing everything in Abaco during HurricaneDorian, his daughter Sheryl and his grandson Maximus relocated to Nassau andstayed with mom and dad, a little over a year, assisting with their care. Whenshe started working during the daytime, our initial caregiver, Ms. Anne Marie Jamelcared for them. After Sheryl returned to Abaco about a year and half ago, wewere able to secure the services of our current full time, live-in caregiver, Ms.Pauline Allen. Up until January, 2022, on the weekends, whenPauline was off, Genean and Barron would alternate staying with mom and dad, tocare for them. Sometimes the demands of our jobs required us working onweekends as well, therefore, we had to hire Ms. Lisa Bain to work on thoseweekends.

A TIME TO DIE

Over the past two (2) months, Elkanah’s healthfurther declined as Dementia had also began to set in. The “great memory bankof the family” could no longer remember some of the family’s history, and attimes, he was convinced that his house was his mother’s house in South Andros. Early in the morning on Tuesday 24th May, 2022, his caregiver Pauline got up to check on him, as he was usually thefirst to arise in the mornings, come out of bed and sit in his lounge chair inthe room. It was then that he was discovered non-responsive. As peaceable as helived in his latter years, Elkanah slipped quietly and peacefully away. He fought a good fight and has now gone to receivehis reward from the righteous judge, the Lord Jesus Christ. Absent from thisbody, present with the Lord. May his soul rest in peace.
