Dorothy Claudette Williams McKay, lived a rich and fulfilling life, leaving an indelible mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing her.Born in Nassau on August 27, 1933, she was the second child of Maude and FredWilliams. She grew up in a close-knit family, in the small community of MasonsAddition. After the passing of her mother, Dorothy and her siblings were raisedby her father and mother’s sister, Kathleen, affectionately called Mama. Thisis where she learned the value of hard work, compassion, and love, at a youngage. These lessons became the foundation of her life and the legacy that sheleaves behind.
Dorothy attended NewProvidence All Age School, leaving at the age of sixteen (16). As ayoung woman, she met the love of her life, Herman McKay, and married him on July 22, 1949, at St. Mary’s Church, in thepresence of his parents, and Dorothy’s father, along with other family membersand close friends. Together, they built a beautiful family and raised eleven children, in a homefilled with love and laughter. Dorothy dedicated her life to providing herchildren with the best possible upbringing, instilling in them, the same valuesthat she had been raised with.
Dorothy was a woman of boundless energy and generosity, so in additionto her role as a caregiver to her children, she sought employment, firstly atGreen Shutters Restaurant on Parliament Street and then Frank’s Place on MackeyStreet. In her latter years, she was a tour car driver, where she demonstratedher caring and compassionate nature to all her passengers. Despite her busyschedule, she played a significant role in helping to raise her grandchildrenand great-grandchildren, picking them up from school and keeping them duringthe summertime. Sometimes she travelled with them to Opa-Locka, Florida, whereshe would spend time with Kathleen’s daughter, Vera Johnson.
She was a superb cook, and her home was always filled with mouthwateringaromas and delicious homemade meals, especially homemade bread. Familygatherings and celebrations were always joyous occasions, thanks to herculinary skills and her knack for bringing everyone together.
In her later years, Dorothy continued to be an integral part of herfamily's lives, despite any physical limitations that came with age. Sheremained a source of strength and wisdom, offering to collect her grandchildrenand great grandchildren from school every day, and being a caregiver whenanyone was sick; giving sage advice and unwavering support to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her love and devotion never wavered, and she continued to be the rock upon which her family relied, even as sheentered her twilight years.
Dorothy leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and dedication tofamily. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will forever be inspired by her selfless nature, her indomitable spirit, and her unwavering love. She will be deeply missed byher extended family and all those who had the honor of knowing her.
We take comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with those she loved, including her son Bryan and her twins, Timothy and Kimberley, as well as allthose who have gone before her. Her legacy will continue to live on through herfamily, who will strive to carry on her values and pass on her wisdom forgenerations to come.
