Donald Alexander Green born on May 17, 1957 wasthe second son and third of seven children born to Patrick and Annie Green inthe community of Matthew Town, Inagua, Bahamas. He was christened and confirmedat St. Philip’s Anglican Episcopal Church at Matthew Town, Inagua and attendedchurch regularly, as was the norm.
Donald was affectionately called “Dee” by his siblings and later ‘Uncle Dee by his nephews andnieces. He loved them all, especially his loving and caring sister MarjorieOutten.
His early education began at InaguaAll Age Public School, which he completed and was successful in hisexaminations. He loved school; his favorite subjects were Geography, Science,History and Mathematics. Throughout his adult life, Donald could be found readingtext books of his favorite subjects, which he kept in his small privatecollection.
While residing at Matthew Town, Inagua, Donald’s family laterchanged their place of worship to Inagua Gospel Chapel. It was there that at anearly age, Donald accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Lord andSaviour. He attended Sunday school and took a leadership role in the youthprograms and meetings, and played an active role in Bible Study.
Donald’s early employment began at Inagua, working in the Meat Departmentof Morton Salt Grocery Store. In the early 1970s, after the death of his elder brotherEdwist, his mother, Elder Annie Green, relocated to Nassau from Inagua insearch of a better life for her family, which included her six remaining children.
Donald, now the eldest son, took employment at Automotive IndustrialDistributors (AID) on Wulff Road where he was employed for many years. OnFebruary 15, 1988 he obtained gainful employment with Purity Bakery Limited/SunshineGroup of Companies, located at Market Street. He worked initially in theMarketing/Inventory Department with responsibility for shipments to the familyislands. There, Mrs. Sonia Marshall, Manager and staff were considered as partof his family. He proved to be a very reliable employee and could be calledupon at any time.
His dedication was clearly seen when upon release from hospitaland not feeling very well, when there were staff shortages at Purity Bakery, hereturned to work when his help was required. Donald had his difficult momentswith his illness but tried his best to cope without complaint.
In Nassau, Donald attended St.Peter’s Baptist Evangelistic Church and was active in the Men’s Group, andchurch choir. He loved his church and his pastor, Revered David S. Butler, whohe assisted with Holy Communion Services. He loved to take photos, including capturingspecial events of church’s services and anniversaries.
Donald was a unique child of all his parents’ children. He washumble and peaceful. He was very quiet, not much of a talker, not out going,reserved and a great thinker. He loved listening to gospel music, reading booksand magazines, as well as the newspapers, which he purchased every day to keepabreast of what was going on around him. He formed his own opinion as a resultof the information he came in possession of. He loved his space and quiet time.
Donald loved to dress in his favorite style of clothing, fromgrowing up as a young boy in Inagua. He was a fan of cowboy outfits: shirts,hats, neckties, belts, handkerchiefs, shoes and Western Movies. You name it andhe loved them all. His love for these earned him the nick name ‘Cowboy’.
Donald possessed great regards/respect and love for his mother,Elder Annie Green. He was a loving, faithful, devoted and dependable son, whoensured that her needs were always met, and that she was well taken care of. Heloved going to the grocery store every Friday to purchase their food items forthe week. His mom wrote the list and he purchased the items.
Donald loved to travel abroad on his vacation; on occasions hevisited his nephew Shonario Outten in Houston, Texas to get away and toexperience life away from work and away from Nassau.
Donald loved his family and made special financial sacrificesduring family crises. He took on an extra side job to assist the needs of hissiblings, not taking a penny from his extra earnings or asking for it in return,just to bring comfort to them. He believed, “Love Makes a Family.” His Godfearing and praying mother taught him well and instilled godly principles in himand his siblings.
Donald became ill in his later years and was in and out ofPrincess Margaret Hospital receiving dialysis treatment. On August 9, 2021 hewas hospitalized for what turned out to be the last time. He stayed there forthree weeks hoping to return home to his mom. At 6:30 a.m. as the sun rose onWednesday, September 1, 2021, God called Donald to his eternal home. He is now atpeace with his Lord and Saviour.
He was predeceased by fivesiblings: Edwist, Patrick, Roderick, Carolie and Gerald.
