Anthony Harry "Gums" Knowles

Anthony Harry Knowles was born onAugust 8, 1957 to the Late Leon and Lillymae Knowles in his beloved city of Nassau,Bahamas. Anthony, better known as “Gums” was the third child of seven childrencreated from this union. Anthony loved his community of St. James Road andlived there from his sunrise to his sunset.

Anthony received the fundamentalsof his education at Eastern Preparatory School on Shirley Street then continuedon to Eastern Junior School. He completed his high school education at Pyform SecondarySchool. At the age of 15, Anthony dedicated his life to the seas. He began histraining under Asa Peirce then eventually Ted Knowles and sailed with the TidalWave Racing Sloop. Anthony was always a strong, resilient hard worker, whoeventually elevated himself to boat captain. He began his professional career carryingout many charters at Nassau Yacht Club, Hurricane Hole and Holiday Inn. As abeloved boat captain for over 40 years, he navigated countless voyages withskill and passion. He was appointed Ambassador of Paradise Island because ofhis warm smile and deep love for the ocean. Anthony sailed for many people from all walks of lifeand from around the world. Through his unwavering commitment to his career asboat captain, Anthony continued to sail until the time of his illness.

In 1989, Anthony met Kelly Miller,which sparked the beginning of their relationship. In 1995, they married and eventuallywas blessed with beautiful twin boys, one of whom passed away shortly afterbirth, while Anthony Jr., continued to bring love and joy to his life.

In 2019, as a result of tremendousweight loss, this prompted Anthony to get tested. It was discovered that he hada rare form of blood cancer and would undergo numerous treatments andtransfusion. Anthony received treatment in Chicago and then eventuallytransferred to The University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive CancerCenter. After careful consideration, Anthony, made the choice to spend theremaining time at home, surrounded by the love and support of family andfriends.

With open heart and sound mind,Anthony accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of his life. On December 26th,2023, he answered the call of his Lord and Savior and peacefully passed away,surrounded by his family.

As the tides carry you to eternalshores, may your adventurous spirit and love for the sea continue to inspireus. Fairwinds and following seas on your final voyage. You will forever remainthe captain of our hearts.
