Announcement/Obituary: On the 4th day of March 1920, the second child, a son, was born in the tranquil village of Doctor s Creek in the settlement of Simms Long Island, Bahamas. He was born to the late John Alfred Knowles son of the late Adam Knowles, the son of the late Thomas and Louise Knowles and Agnes Knowles nee Pinder and the late Davie Rodger Pinder Sr. and Aremintha Knowles daughter of the late Meshack Knowles of Tatnal, Long Island and Hanna Knowles nee Miller of Millers, Long Island. He was given the name Clifford Donald Knowles. As the Beulah Union Baptist Church bell rang out the call to worship and the saints chanted the old familiar hymns, Clifford was taken to church and was presented to the Lord in dedication by the late Leaders Timothy Adderley and Charles Rahming. In 1929 at the tender age of 9 years, he was predeceased by his mother and was cared for by Mrs. Orelia Knowles nee Wells of Bains, Long Island and his paternal grandmother Agnes Knowles of Bridgewater, Long Island. C.D. or Mud, as he was affectionately called attended the Simms All Age School in Long Island where he excelled under the tutelage of the late Mr. Treva Smith and Rufus Knowles and was later transferred to the Eastern Preparatory School on Shirley Street, New Providence. In 1937 while in New Providence, he sought and found gainful employment and started his first working experience with Carl Clyde Lime Construction Company. In 1942 Clifford returned to Long Island to assist his paternal grandmother and siblings, there he met and married Edith Ester Knowles nee Smith the daughter of the late John Smith son of Mendis Smith and Josephine Smith of Oneils, Long Island and Marion Knowles daughter of Timothy and Terricita Knowles of Simms, Long Island. His wife predeceased him on 5th June, 2002 at 1:30 a.m. They were joined in holy matrimony by the late Alonzo Knowles in Burnt Ground, Long Island who passed away less than two (2) hours after the ceremony. This union, despite the hard economical times was blessed by our dad s strong determination to provide and care for his wife and family. As a young man, he secured his second working experience by facing up to the challenge of becoming a boat man. He worked as a cook and second mate on board the sail freight boat call the Eva B, the Captain Roberts and the Gary Roberts under the captainship of the late Captain Edmond Russell, Lesley Albury and Timothy (Uncle Tim) Knowles. In 1952-1965 he worked in the United States of America for Gerald Lamb and Ellis Lamb as a heavy equipment operator, foreman and as a side job, picking fruits for the California Farm. Clifford entreated with his wife to relocate to the United States of America to be with him, however, this proved unsuccessful. He then return to Long Island where he gained employment with his cousin Bishop Henry Adderley as a construction worker and shortly after, gained employment with the Estate of Stella Maris as a landscaper, a position he held until he retired in the late 1980 s and was cared for by his children. In 1965 after the birth of his last son Alonzo, Clifford felt the call of God and was led to go into the wilderness to tarry and seek his salvation. After the wilderness experience, he went to church (Beulah Union Baptist) where he shared his testimony and was later baptized and received into the family of God by the late Superintendent Rev. Enoch Beckford I. As time went on, Clifford grew to be an outstanding Christian gentleman under the leadership of the late Timothy Adderley, Charles Rahming, Herman Finley and The Rev. Urban Knowles, Pastor Emeritus. He was appointed Sunday School Superintendent which afforded him the opportunity to challenge and bring so many into the fold of God, a position he served in for 40 years exceptionally. Bro. Clifford as he was affectionately called, was promoted by God to serve as the First President of the Long Island District Convention of the Bahamas Baptist Union of Churches. He was also known as the Telephone Evangelist on the island of Long Island. Morning and night, Clifford could be found and heard ministering and praying with and for people throughout Long Island and the Bahamas. He was a true witness, a true lover of God and his people and a good example of a husband, father, priest and provider to his wife and children. For many years, Clifford visited the sick, shut-ins and the district churches of the Baptist Community and others until his sight begin to fail. Bro. Clifford was a genealogist who assisted many families and neighbours with knowing their family linage. A prominent, father, provider and a dedicated priest to his family, he taught his children how to pray, read and apply the word of God, he took them to church, Sunday School, Baptist Training Union and to Vacation Bible School. As an outstanding Sunday School teacher of his day, he introduced his children to Jesus in an attempt to secure for them forgiveness of sin and salvation. As a preacher and witness for his Lord and Savior, Clifford loved to sing and pray; early in the morning and last thing in the night, he filled the home with prayers. In addition, during his stay at hospital (Geriatric), he could be heard singing, humming and tapping, making melodious music unto the Lord and to his fellow residents. Clifford loved to give just as he was liberated by the spirit of God to present the Gospel at anytime and anywhere. He would give away anything that he had. With long live the Lord satisfied our dad and gave him his salvation as family members, doctors and nurses marveled at the radiance that emanated from his face the night of his peaceful demise. On the night of October 9th, 2014 he died like a champion with no struggle, for his God granted him a smooth transition.
